How to apply for the new open work permit for TR to PR applicants
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) released information for how essential workers and international students can apply for an open work permit.
The guide is for those who applied to the new temporary residence to permanent residence (TR to PR) pathways. The official instructions can be found on the government’s website.
The TR to PR pathways offered immigration pathways to international student graduates, essential worker, and French-speaking individuals in Canada.
The new open work permit is for those who applied for these programs with a soon-to-expire permit. The program acts like a bridging open work permit, allowing applicants to stay in Canada while the IRCC decides on their application. The new work permits will be valid until December 31, 2022.
An applicant’s spouse, common-law partner, or dependent child over 18 years old, who is in Canada, may also apply got a work permit.
IRCC states that candidates may apply up to four (4) months before their current temporary status expires. However, family members can apply at any time. Furthermore, those who are on maintained status or are eligible to restore their status, may apply at any time.
The only way to apply for the new open work permit is online. Candidates cannot apply at a port of entry. If someone cannot apply online due to a disability or poor internet connection, IRCC offers paper applications to assist them.
To start the application process, candidates need to create an account with the IRCC. All documents will need to be uploaded electronically. There is a processing fee of $155.00 that candidates will need to pay to apply.
Once an account is created, candidates will receive a personalized document checklist. The IRCC provides an instruction guide to help candidates fill out the forms.
