Summer 2021 new deadline for temporary residents to restore their status
The immigration department is allowing temporary residents a chance to extend their stay in Canada. Temporary residents who had a valid status on January 30, 2020 or after, but the status expires on or before May 31, 2021 will have until August 31, 2021 to apply to restore their status. This is an extension of the previous announcement stating the extension was valid until December 31, 2020. The policy affects workers, students, and visitors who were in Canada when their status expired. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ninety (90) days to apply to restore a status is replaced.
This policy is only for those who meet certain conditions. To be eligible, applicants must have been in Canada with a valid status between January 30, 2020 and May 31, 2021. Applicants must have stayed in Canada since they entered the country, and who lost their temporary status during that period. Lastly, the fees for processing their application must be paid prior.
The policy extends to work permit holders with job offers to work while their application is processing. Those temporary workers may be allowed to start a job if they are approved for the new policy and are waiting on a decision to restore their status or get a work permit.
